DANTI, Egnatio (1536-86). Trattato dell'uso et della fabbrica dell'astrolabio. Florence: Giunti, 1569. Small 4° (217 x 150mm). Woodcut Medici arms with globe on title, repeated on A3v, 22 woodcut illustrations, 7 initials (stitching weak, final gathering detached and 4 others detaching, lower corner and margin of title torn away, light waterstaining in some upper margins, clean tear in margin of Y1, spotted throughout). Contemporary limp vellum (lacking spine, covers detached, front cover with tear, lightly soiled). Provenance: Enrico Canali (signature on front cover, dated 11.1.92).
FIRST EDITION of the earliest Italian astronomical treatise in the vernacular, discussing how to make and use your own astrolabe. In his first publication, Danti -- anticipating Tycho Brahe -- approached very closely the obliquity of the ecliptic.
