He took part in a number of significant actions in the Napoleonic wars, and later participated in the blockading of New London, Connecticut. He was promoted Admiral in 1841 and made GCB in 1842. Bougard's Le petit flambeau de la mer was first published in 1684. Serres, Marine Painter to the King, translated the work and added his magnificent views of headlands, ports, lighthouses, landmarks and harbour entrances to this English edition.
