Lot Essay

The festival is probably a Muhurram procession where the deity is carried through the streets but the picture appears to be a fantasy rather than a specific event. The Muhurram festival commemorates the martydom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Muhammad. Taziyas, symbolising the martyr's tomb are carried through the streets and devotees beat theirs chests crying 'Husain Husain'.
