BEKE, Charles Tilstone (1800-1874). The Late Dr. Charles Beke's Discoveries of Sinai in Arabia and of Midian ... edited by his widow. London: Trubner, 1878. 4° (243 x 151mm), frontispiece portrait, 15 plates, most wood-engraved views by W.J. Welch, folding coloured map (later quires affected by damp, map with 130mm. clean tear). Presentation binding in contemporary red morocco gilt, front cover reprising the view of 'Migdol' or Castle of Akaba, gilt edges (rubbed, severe denting to rear cover). Provenance: Samuel Morley (1809-1886; 4-line presentation inscription from 'the editor' on front blank, dated 26 June 1878).
Samuel Morley was a dissenting philanthropist, politician and businessman who would have approved of the book's religious aspirations. Curiously, however, this copy also contains a tipped-in inscription from Mrs Beke to Lord Stanley of Alderley, with the earlier date of 18 June 1878.
