WILKINSON, John Gardner (1797-1875). Topography of Thebes, and General View of Egypt. London: John Murray, 1835. 8° (216 x 138mm), 11 lithographed plates after the author, 3 double-page and 3 folding. (Heavy spotting to double-page plates, some lighter spotting elsewhere.) Contemporary half calf and spot-marbled boards, marbled edges (lightly rubbed, pencil marks on upper cover). Provenance: Joseph Cook the Elder (1759-1844, his manuscript notes at front) -- S.E. Widdrington, formerly Cook (armoral bookplate; both of Newton Hall).
FIRST EDITION of Gardner's account of his archaeological excavations among the tombs at Thebes in 1827-28. The manuscript notes comprise a tipped-in leaf on the etymology and definition of the word 'Oasis', authenticated by Joseph Cook as in Wilkinson's hand ('Mr. Wilkinson's summation of the word oasis -- 1834. Sent by him from Alnwick Castle to Newton Hall'). Also a one-page note by Cook on front blank, an extract from his son's, the Rev. Joseph Cook [Junior's], journal which describes the farthest point reached on his journey up the Nile with Dr. Bromhead, 'the rocks of Wady Halfer', cross-referenced to the plate of 'the 2nd cataract at Wádef Hálfeh' at p. 499. Additionally, a 3pp. note in Cook's hand on a folded folio bifolium, an extract from vol. 2 of Madden's Travels in Egypt [1829], descrbing his visit to underground tombs previously discovered by Bromhead and Cook on their Nile journey, combined with a transcript of Madden's letter describing Joseph Cook the Younger's death 'on the back of his camel in travelling between Mount Sinai & Tor on the Red Sea on the 3rd of March 1825'. With 2 other works on Egypt by Robert Wilson and Richard Lepsius, the former with Newton Hall bookplate and note of purchase by Joseph Cook the Elder. (3)
