FIRST EDITION of Lear's last travel book, 'still an excellent guide to that island' (Levi). Despite the lack of classical antiquities, he found 'Every part of Corsica full of scenes stamped with original beauty and uncommon interest ... many of the llustrations were made in short pedestrian excursions, particularly in the forests, at some distance from the high road' (preface, pp. ix-x). The wood-engravings were executed under Lear's supervision in Paris. Peter Levi, Edward Lear (1995), pp. 227-229.
