Lot Essay
The contrapposto pose recalls Greek ideals. Figures based on the Greek model with the attributes of Hermes were popular throughout the Roman Period. Cf. D. G. Mitten & S. F. Doeringer, Master Bronzes from the Classical World, Mainz am Rhein, 1968, no. 247. The subject could be identified as Hermes because of the central depression on the top of his head, suggesting it may once have been surmounted by his characteristic winged petasos.
