SYRIA, CIRCA 5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
Composed of multi-coloured tesserae, depicting a vase with gadrooned body, the handles with bifurcated terminals, with two birds perched on the rim and a further two flanking the base, among fruiting vines, within a chequered border
56½ x 43½ in. (143.5 x 110.5 cm.)
Provenance
Formerly in the collection of the artist Sir William Nicholson (1872-1949), thence by descent to his son Ben Nicholson (1894-1982). The mosaic was reputedly acquired in Syria circa 1900-1910 and was subsequently set within the Medieval Hall of their home, The Manor House in Wiltshire.
Property of a private UK collector, acquired in 2002.
