AFTERNOON SESSION THE GIL AND MYRNA GOLDFINE COLLECTION OF SOUTH ITALIAN RED FIGURE VASES Gil and Myrna Goldfine's South Italian red-figure vase collection began with the acquisition in May 1971 of an Apulian skyphos (lot 197) depicting a lady holding a jewellery box, purchased from Hesperia Art in Philadelphia. This marked the start of a collection that was also an enduring love affair with South Italian pottery. Created over 30 years, this corpus of 58 lots includes a wide variety of vases and fish plates, many still with the original purchase invoices and accompanied by letters from one of the great authorities on the subject, Professor A.D. Trendall, documenting not only the story of each piece, but also the evolution of the Goldfines' own collecting journey. The objects reflect the discerning spirit which characterizes the personal tastes of the collectors. Each piece is unique and charming in its own way. Scholars and laymen alike will readily appreciate the exquisite Apulian mug displaying a hound attacking a stag (lot 204); the simplicity of the Lucanian lekythos with its elegant Dionysian figure (lot 217); a rare depiction of Herakles on an Apulian plate (lot 224); the asymmetric decoration on the Campanian skyphos attributed to the Siamese Painter (lot 230); and fish plates with marine subjects showing a variety of enchanting idiosyncratic expressions, such as the plate by the Painter of Boston (lot 215). The individuality, rarity, visual charm and depth of this collection set it apart and are a testament to Gil and Myrna Goldfine's enduring passion for these vases which are truly a window into the ancient world. Lots 192 to 249 are accompanied by an export license from the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Lot Essay

A hand written letter from Professor A. D. Trendall accompanies this lot, confirming the attribution to the 'Loose Lock Group':
30 April 1975:...It belongs to a group contemporary with 'Looped Hair', which I call the 'Loose Lock' Group, from the practice of representing one lock of hair standing out in front of the brow, apart from the general mass of hair which covers it.
