The form is derived from a Chinese original, see John Ayers et al., Porcelain for Palaces, British Museum Exhibition Catalogue (London, 1990), p. 236, no. 256. For a Meissen box and cover possibly by the same hand as the same lot, see Abraham L. den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, 2000), pp. 292-293, no. 212, where he refers to the present example. See also the tankard on pp. 272-273, no. 199, which is also decorated in a very similar style to the present example.
