Lot Essay

For a discussion of the arms and family and two pieces from the service, see Dieter Hoffmeister, Meissener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts, Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg (Hamburg, 1999), Vol. II, pp. 528-529, no. 346 (offered by Bonhams, London, 25th November 2009, lot 77) and no. 347.

Burchard Christoph Graf von Münnich (1683-1767) entered the service of Czar Peter The Great of Russia in 1721, and in 1728 (in the reign of Peter II) he was created Count and General of the Infantry. He rose further to ultimately become Field Marshal in 1732 (in Czarina Anna Ivanovna's reign). After the coup of 1741 he was exiled to Siberia by Czarina Elizabeth, returning 20 years later.
