SCREAMING EAGLE IN MAGNUM FORMAT
These two lots of 2004 Screaming Eagle arrive at Christie's by means of an affiliation with direct ties to former winery ownership. Prior to this moment these magnums were destined for the sole purpose of showcasing the majesty of the vineyard to the vintners' VIP enthusiasts. In 2004, Screaming Eagle made only 500 cases total making these magnums a rare subset of the vintage never before offered to the public.

Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle is likely Napa Valley's smallest winery. The wine made from just one acre of vines, just below Dalla Valle, in a small stone winery in Oakville (though not for long, as a new winemaking facility is underway), has captured the hearts and attention of wine collectors across the globe. Available only through the mailing list, the elusive yet legendary Screaming Eagle reaches extraordinary prices based on its cult following. The vines are Cabernet Sauvignon primarily, but Merlot and Cabernet Franc are blended in small amounts. During her tenure, winemaker Heidi Barrett used small, half-ton fermenters, plenty of punching down with no fining or filtration to make a concentrated, yet pure version of the fruit. The wine is aged in 65 percent new French oak barrels in a small cave for almost two years.
In March 2006 Screaming Eagle changed ownership and Heidi Barrett was no longer its winemaker. With the 2006 harvest former Christie's and Zachy's auctioneer, Ursula Hermacinski, became General Manager of this highly esteemed wine estate. The day to day winemaker is Andy Erickson, supported by Bordelais consultant Michel Rolland.
Screaming Eagle--Vintage 2004
Napa Valley
The 2004, which is nearly 90 Cabernet Sauvignon, with tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, is an up-front style of wine. There were originally around 800 cases of this wine, but Banks and his crew culled out in excess of 200 or so cases, so the quantity produced is approximately 500. The wine has a dark ruby/purple color and a sweet cassis nose with some licorice and very subtle camphor and earth. The wine is exceptionally pure, beautifully textured, opulent, and forward, which is very much in keeping with the style of this vintage. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years.
