Lot Essay

The approx. knot count is 9H x 10V per sq.cm.

The signature is one that was published by George Farrow as being an early signature of Zareh Penyamin, on the basis of a cartoon which bore this signature that came by descent through the family of Zareh Penyamin. In addition to the rug published by Farrow, which combined this signature with a Hereke signature, a prayer rug with the same signature was sold Christie's London, 28 April 1994, 419. A near pair to the present rug was sold Christie's London, 8 October 2009, lot 147.
