Lot Essay

The pierced petal galleries that make up this form and the bell towers of the rooks are typically associated with the workshops of the German turners. Various design manuals were published in the 19th Century showing comparable examples that were used by apprentices seeking to qualify as 'master' turners. These pieces are exceptionally delicate and valued as "showpieces". See Franz Josef Lang, Chess Sets by German Turners, Chess Collectors International, Vol. 2, November 1991, No. 3.
