The figures modelled as Eskimo hunters, walrus', polar bears and the rooks as igloos, the pawns as seals, some inscribed with initials 'R.L 77' to underside
The king -- 2 in. (5 cm.) high; the pawn -- 1¼ in. (3 cm.) high
Together with an ivory, hardwood and pewter strung board -- 10 in. (25.5 cm.) wide

Lot Essay

From the late 19th Century into the 20th Century Eskimo ivory carvers started to produce sets for trade. The earlier examples depicted Eskimos versus Europeans or Russians, and later the rituals of daily life together with animals were familiar subjects.
