Lot Essay

Dieppe is probably the most well known centre of carving in France, with a long established history. The 'toyshops' that lined the Grand Rue acted as selling fronts as well as craft workshops, the shopkeeper typically employing a number of apprentices. Dieppe suffered from the British blockade on African ivory from Senegal during the Napoleonic wars and the lack of English tourists. This carved ivory set illustrates the passion for historical characters.
