Lot Essay

Louis XV's example was placed with Vauban on the chimney-piece of the Cabinet de la Pendule. They were both on gilt-copper socles. The factory sales registers record two sales, before the Revolution, of Turenne with a plinth: one to the Duc de Liancourt on 20 July 1784 for 600 livres, 1 Turenne et socle beau bleu, (Vy 9 fol. 127); and one on 3 November 1785 to the Duc de Bouillon for 480 livres, 1 Turenne et socle (Vy 9 fol. 255).

For an example of the model see Emile Bourgeois, Le Biscuit de Sèvres, vol. I, pl. 42, no. 599 and an example sold in these Rooms on 4 December 1985, lot 24.
