This rarely published self-portrait was made in the Cuzco, Peru, studio in which Penn made the now-historic series of portraits of local sitters that established a template for so many later sittings -- both fashion and portrait -- that exploited diffused daylight and set his subjects against a neutral but tangible mid-tone backdrop.
