Lot Essay

The 1961 Year Book presented exclusively a portfolio of ten of the images due to be published in the spring of that year in Brandt's Perspective of Nudes. Hall commented on '...the elusive and mysterious quality which seems to distinguish [Brandt's] work from that of all other photographers. It is not just what he sees so much as the way in which he sees it. By simple photographic techniques -- often to do with darkroom manipulation -- he produces prints which reveal that the ordinary can be something more than ordinary -- something wonderful.'
