The subject of this study -- in which Brandt willfully exploits the characteristics of his wide-angle lens to create an eerie sense of dislocation and scale -- is his 10-year old niece Judith, daughter of his brother Rolf. Paul Delany observes how the deep focus turns Judith into 'an uncanny, Alice-like figure' and how, in such pictures, 'Brandt made rooms into equal partners in the human dramas that they enclose.'
