Edo Period (Late 17th-Early 18th Century)
Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the flush-fitting lid with an unusual undulating pewter rim, the exterior gyobu nashiji decorated in gold, black, red and silver takamaki-e, kirikane, hiramaki-e, nashiji, depicting a cockerel, a hen and three chicks beside a group of rocks, the interior of both box and lid decorated with a rustic village set in a valley beside a lake in a mountainous landscape, inkstone and gilt copper waterdropper decorated with red and grey shippo enamel and shakudo on a nanako ground, silver rims
