Sugata [configuration]: honzukuri, somewhat narrowing blade of even curve, iori-mune, chu-gissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: ko-itame with ji-nie overall
Hamon [tempering pattern]: gunome-ba with choji and a sugu-yakidashi of nioi with nie
Boshi [tip]: ko-maru
Nakago [tang]: ubu, two mekugi-ana, one a shinobi-ana, katte sagari file marks, ha-agari kurijiri
Nagasa [length of blade]: 85.8cm.
Koshirae [mounting]: black-lacquered saya carved with stylized clouds, kojiri, kurikata, koi-guchi, fuchigashira all of russet iron with cherry blossoms and with gilt bordering, the long kojiri pierced with a gold kakihan, aoigata iron tsuba with sixteen gold-inlaid paulownia mon on each side

The sword was presented to Vice Admiral William Christopher Pakenham, G.C.B., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O (1861-1933) by the Emperor Meiji (1852-1912) in 1906 for his services as an observer aboard the HIJMS Asahi at the Battle of Tsushima in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese war. As a Captain he served as naval attaché to the Japanese navy from 1904 to 1906. He was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Bath on 24th July 1905 and he was later awarded the Order of the Rising Sun (Second Class) from the Emperor on 18th April 1906.
