YUTAKA TAKANASHI

Toshi-e -- Towards the City. Tokyo: for the author, 1974.

2 volumes: folio (420 x 280 mm) and quarto (257 x 183 mm). 62 photographs, and 54 photographs. Original black cloth with metal disk mounted on the front panel, quarto volume in original black wrappers, printed paper label on cover (almost none of the usual wear on the disk; quarto vol. with a little rubbing at the corners), both volumes in the original black cardboard clamshell box, printed paper label on spine overlapping on front cover, in the original cardboard shipping box (soiling and light wear on the shipping carton).

FIRST EDITION, AN EXCELLENT COPY IN THE ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. Toshi-e is the 'most luxurious' and last of the Provoke books, by one of its founding members; taking as his theme the cost paid by Japan for unbridled urbanisation and consumerism, 'Takanashi addresses this complex question with lyrical passion'. Kaneko & Vartanian, Japanese Photobooks, pp.168-173; The Photobook, vol. I, p.302.
