The Dr. Neil Kendall Collection of 20th Century Chinese Ceramics. Lots 403-439 inclusive Collecting and interest in other cultures and creative expression of humanity proved a perfect balance to my working life as a doctor. I delighted in travelling and making acquaintances/friendships around the world through a common interest in enjoying beautiful things. Chinese art and culture facinated me; I had a short elective period of study in Hong Kong as a medical student which enabled me to interact with Chinese people and their history. Chinese philosophy and wisdom resonated with me. In the early 1990's I met Peter Wain, an oriental art dealer, who for a number of years had had a fascination and appreciation for the quality of some pieces of Chinese porcelain from the early years of the Chinese Republic. He had acquired some fine pieces and was preparing a selling exhibition of 20th century ceramics as part of the celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the British Antique Dealers Association - and so it was that I found myself outside his shop at 3.30am one May morning in 1993 to secure myself first place in the queue. By the time the exhibition opened at 11.00am there were some 20 people in the queue - collectors, representatives from museums and dealers. I was able to secure several pieces and these formed the basis for my collection of Chinese porcelain (together with a few pieces of Yixing which I couldn't resist) which I continued to collect for the next 3 years. I collected pieces which pleased my eye, many of which I feel represent the work of the master potters and master porcelain painters of the early 20th century. Life changes as we create new reality for ourselves which then resonates with others we connect with facilitating more changes in existing structure. I now find myself in transition having taken early retirement from medicine in order to pursue a new interest in the human energy consciousness system. Interestingly this was something the ancient Chinese philosophers and sages were aware of and I note that many of the pieces of porcelain reflect aspects of taoist philosophy and the aesthetic that developed by the scholars. It is time for me to allow my collection to move on and be appreciated by others. I hope these pieces will give as much pleasure and joy to their new guardians as they have given to me over the years. Dr C.Neil Kendall
