A GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND MARQUETRY SIDEBOARD
THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
Inlaid overall with boxwood and chequered lines, the D-shaped crossbanded top above a frieze drawer and arched apron with fan spandrels flanked on one side by a deep cellarette drawer and on the other by two drawers, and with doors inlaid in imitation of drawers, on square tapering legs with spade feet, the centre drawer inscribed 'G.C.H. 1819', and 'J. MENZIES 1819', handles replaced, the cellarette originally lined and with later divisions

Lot Essay

The inscription G.C.H. may refer to the honour Knight Grand Cross of the Guelphic (or Hanoverian) Order. The order was instituted by The Prince Regent in 1815 and continued in the gift of the British Monarch until 1837. Since then it has been conferred by the Kingdom of Hanover.
