Lot Essay

This pair of 'antique' vases correspond to pattern no. 91 illustrated in Eleanor Coade's Etchings of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory, published in the late 1770s and early 1780s.
A closely related pair of vases was supplied by Coade for niches flanking the door to St Mary's Chapel, Lulworth, built in 1786-7 by John Tasker (A. Kelly, Mrs Coade's Stone, Upton-upon-Severn, 1990, p. 196). St Mary's Chapel was the first free-standing Roman Catholic church built in Britain for public worship since the Reformation.
An almost identical pair of vases, but with modern upper sections, was sold by T. Crowther & Son, 282 North End Road, Christie's, 12-14 October 1992, lot 1422 (£11,000 including premium).
