Lot Essay
The pattern of lady's writing-table or bonheur-du-jour relates to one of c. 1795 stamped by the Lancaster and London firm of Gillows, in the collection of Lancaster City Museums. It follows a design of 1794 for a Mr Briscoe. Gillows noted that the table was fitted with 'a flap to turn over and a book shelf to stand upon do' (S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. I, p. 297, pls. 323-324). A single related example was sold by Mr & Mrs Geoffrey Gomme, Christie's South Kensington, 24 January 2001, lot 338 (£4,112).
