CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed to his aunt, Leonie [Leslie], Brindisi (Italy), 2 December [1898], thanking her for a writing case which is 'particularly convenient as it fits in my iron despatch box'; he is to sail at midnight, 'but I fear that I shall be ill shortly afterwards. I hate the sea and have a constitutional aversion to travel', one page, 8vo, on 35a Cumberland Place paper, elaborately framed and glazed with a portrait photograph (not examined out of frame). After his six months' leave for the Sudan war, Churchill was returning to his regiment in India, working on The River War as he went: by mid-March he was on his way home again, this time for good, having resigned his commission.
