Autograph letter signed to 'Dear Sandys', 35a Great Cumberland Place, 10 October 1899, apologising for missing him, 'I sail on the 14th for the Cape, but the actual fighting will begin before the week is out and may be over before the main army arrives. I shall hope to meet you again somewhere', one page, 8vo, bifolium. Provenance: Christie's South Kensington, 5 May 1995, lot 45.
The recipient is possibly George John Sandys, MP for Wells between 1910 and 1918, who also served in the South African War; his son, Duncan, was to marry Churchill's eldest daughter, Diana, in 1935.
