CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed to [Charles Frederic] Moberly Bell (managing director of The Times), 'In the train', 20 August 1900, 'I am really vy much obliged to you, and to Mr Buckle [editor], for the vy excellent report of my speech at Plymouth which appeared in Saturday's issue ... It is extremely kind of you to help me in this way', one page, 8vo, bifolium. Provenance: Sotheby's, 21 February 1978, lot 372.
Fresh from his South African exploits, Churchill found himself so much in demand as a speaker in advance of the general election that he was obliged to limit his engagements to helping personal friends -- in this case his cousin, Ivor Guest, who had won the Plymouth consituency at a by-election in February that year.
