CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed to the Bishop of Manchester (James Moorhouse), 105 Mount Street, 3 May 1903, 'I have been urged to make representations on behalf of Mr Waddington who is desirous of obtaining a living & whose parents are constituents of mine in Oldham', asking the Bishop to 'tell me in confidence whether this gentleman is in fact an adequate person for preferment', two pages, 8vo, annotated by recipient. Provenance: Swann, 17 September 1992, lot 64.
Churchill had promised Waddington's father in November 1900 as a 'sacred trust' to find a preferment for his son (see lot 30), but was evidently somewhat slow in pursuing this.
