CHURCHILL, Winston S. For Free Trade. A Collection of Speeches Delivered at Manchester or in the House of Commons during the Fiscal Controversy preceding the late General Election. London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1906.
8° (217 x 156mm). Half-title. Original publisher's printed dark red matt card wrappers (rebacked), contained in recent blue morocco-backed clamshell case. Provenance: Sotheby's, 14 July 1999, lot 162.
RARE COLLECTION OF SPEECHES ON THE MAJOR POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ISSUE OF THE DAY. 'Free Trade had to be Churchill's prime issue. While other Liberal candidates attempted to worship at other altars it will be noticed that Churchill made none save nominal oblations on the issue of Chinese labour in the Transvaal, partly because he understood the difficulties, and partly because he realized that if he was going to win [his seat as a Liberal in the 1906 election] it was going to be on Free Trade' (Randolph S. Churchill, Volume II Young Statesman 1901-1914, p.117). Copies in the original binding, such as the present work, are EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE. According to ABPC-online, only three copies thus have sold at auction since 1975, including the present one. Woods A9.
