CHURCHILL, Winston S. Two typed letters signed to Robert Graves, 10 Downing Street [the second in fact from Chequers], 13 February and 15 March 1943, 2 pages, 4to, envelopes.
A RARE REFERENCE TO WARTIME ILL-HEALTH. 'During my illness I read your book about Milton's wife, which you so kindly sent me. It makes a wonderfully vivid picture. You have certainly vindicated Macaulay: "To make the past the present, to bring the distant near ...". No one does it so well or so agreeably as you'; the letter of 13 February acknowledges the gift of the book.
On 15 March 1943 Churchill was still at Chequers recovering from a bout of pneumonia, which had been affecting him since 24 February.
