Note:
Like many savants and intellectuals of his day, Fu expressed, via his own unique and personal approach, his complex sentiments regarding the intricate and multi-faceted contemporary political atmosphere. On the one hand he admired the aloofness from worldly affairs and the integrity and faith of Xie An's chosen life of retreat into the mountains, undecided, on the other hand, he also coveted Tao Yuanming's utopianist (the Garden of Peaches of Immortality) lifestyle. Thus, Tao Yuanming was also amongst Fu Baoshi's favorite subject characters.
Scholars and Pine illustrates again Xie Dong Shan (Xie of East Mountain), Wang Xizhi and two companions on a shaded mountain path. A unique "Six Dynasties Juniper" serves as a backdrop to this painting. This juniper tree has a famed origin and is currently located in Nanjing's Dongnan University. The tree is fabled to be a relic from the Six Dynasties period more than 1500 years ago. According to popular theory, the tree is reputed to have been personally planted by Emperor Liang Wu inside his palace. When armies of the Sui dynasty annihilated the Chen dynasty, they completely destroyed Nanjing's walls, palaces and parks. This tree fortunately survived the chaos of war to this day. This peculiar tree is likened to steadfast souls such as Xie An, and is a symbol of survival and triumph through death and chaos. The integrity of both mirror and mutually illuminate each other in the painting.
