KIEL, Lev Ivanovich (1790-1851). [Mundiry Rossiiskoi Armii. N.p.: n.p., c.1821.]
2° (296 x 220mm). 127 hand-coloured aquatint plates of uniforms after Kiel by Kolpakov, Paul and Levachez, some with captions in Russian, French or both. (Two plates with some spotting, a very few leaves lightly browned, one plate with an early repair in the margin.) Contemporary, possibly Russian, green half morocco, flat spine handsomely tooled in compartments in gilt and blind (corners and edges lightly rubbed.)
APPARENTLY THE MOST COMPLETE KNOWN SET OF KIEL'S RARE HAND-COLOURED AQUATINTS, comprising 54 more plates than any copy listed in the standard bibliographies, including most of the 73 listed by Rovinskii. The present set includes uniforms for regiments not listed by Rovinskii: the Dvorianskii Eskadron, Konno-Egerskii Polk, Furshtatskii Batalion, Finskii Polk, Astrakhanskii Polk, and others, and at times shows variants of the same plate with the colours of various regiments, for instance there are 9 variant uniforms for the Superior Officers of the Hussars regiments, and 5 variant uniforms for the Life Guards Dragoons regiments. The Sementchenkoff copy, the only one we could trace at auction, comprised only 35 plates. Colas 1604 (65 plates); Lipperheide Qo7; Rovinskii, Gravery, 478-84 (73 plates); Zaionchkovskii 1677 (73 plates).
