BRAUN, Georg (1541-1622) and HOGENBERG, Franz (c.1538-1590). Civitates orbis terrarum. Cologne: P. von Brachel, 1618-1625.
6 volumes in 2, 2° (415 x 280mm). Latin text. 6 engraved allegorical titles, 315 double-page plates (of 363), ALL COLOURED BY AN EARLY HAND. (First title and conjugate leaf detached and with some wear and creases in the margins, 3 plates detached, a few plates creased, occasional tears, occasional marginal dampstain, some browning, plate 59 and index of vol. 3 bound after vol. 4, index of vol. 4 lacking.) Contemporary Dutch vellum, panelled in gilt with roll tools and corner ornaments and with a large central arabesque, edges gilt (lacking ties, without free endpapers, some soiling and staining, one joint starting near the foot, one spine head chipped). Provenance: 'NBT' (cipher in ink in an early hand).
A COLOURED COPY OF THE FIRST SYSTEMATIC CITY ATLAS. The Civitates Orbis Terrarum is 'justly celebrated as the first general collection devoted solely to topographical views. Many of the towns depicted are the first engraved views. Apart from its topographical value, the work is of great interest for its record of the domestic life of the period. Town views, heraldic coats of arms, rural scenes, land and water transport, public buildings and so on are vividly depicted' (NMM). 'The most original and magnificent of all city-atlases', which drew 'on the work of accomplished topographical artists; and... reproduced it in pictorial compositions of great charm and individuality' (Skelton, p.VII). Koeman remarks on the popularity of the work and the great number of editions; these are sometimes difficult to distinguish because of inconsistent or sometimes absent dating; the present set carries the following sequence of dates: 1623, 1625, 1581, 1574, no date, 1618. Cf. Koeman (1967-70) B & H 1-5; cf. NMM III, i, 459 (1573-1618 ed.); cf. Phillips Atlases 59 (1612 edition); cf. Skelton 'Introduction', in: G. Braun and F. Hogenberg, Civitates orbis terrarum (Amsterdam: 1965). (2)
