ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo de. Teatro della Guerra Contro Il Turco. Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, 1687 [but c. 1688].
2° (471 x 345mm). Engraved title and 40 double-page engraved plates. (Repairs, mostly in the margins and gutter, title with some small adhesive stains.) Early vellum, probably contemporary (rebacked and repaired, plate stubs renewed, staining).
A RARE ALBUM OF FINE ENGRAVINGS COMMEMORATING THE DEFEATS OF SULTAN MEHMED IV in various European theatres. Mehmed IV's reverses in Austria, Hungary, Greece, and in the Aegean and Adriatic led to his eventual deposition. ABPC records only one copy at auction in over 35 years: the Atabey copy (purchased, Bloomsbury, 16 November 2000, lot 112; sold, Sotheby's, 30 May 2002, lot 1563, £26,000 hammer). WorldCat gives 3 locations only: at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and Brown University. There is some discrepancy between copies, with the BSB copy calling for 39 plates, and the Atabey copy with a map of Hungary not present here or apparently in the Brown copy.
