SIMKIN, Richard (1850-1926). Eighteen original pencil and watercolour drawings of British, Irish and Anglo-Indian army uniforms, each titled and signed by the artist, dated 1884-1890 [or more rarely undated], 381 x 274mm. or similar, window-mounted, preserved in red cloth box.
FINE EXAMPLES OF SIMKIN'S WORK, MAINLY ON CAVALRY. One of the best known illustrators of British army uniforms, Richard Simkin first joined a volunteer regiment before attending art school and emerging as a military artist in the early 1880s. He produced A Book of Soldiers in about 1885, and his illustrations for the Army and Navy Gazette, starting with the 1st Life Guards in January 1888, numbered 177 plates by completion of the series in September 1902. The drawing of the 1st Life Guards in the present collection is appropriately dated 1887, and judging by their dates it is possible that many of the drawings were done for the Army and Navy Gazette series. However, the 15th King's Hussars of 1884 is clearly too early. A few designs incorporate several figures, but the majority show a single cavalryman. Other regiments are the 2nd Dragoon Guards, Queen's Bays; 2nd Life Guards; 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards; 1st Royal Dragoons; 2nd Dragoons, Royal Scots Greys; 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars; 13th Husssars; 21st Hussars; 5th Royal Irish Lancers; and the 17th Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers. The only non-colonial infantry are The Black Watch, Royal Highlanders; and Infantry of the Line. Indian regiments include the 2nd Bombay Lancers and Bombay Infantry; the Prince of Wales Own Bengal Lancers with Bengal native infantry; and the Queen's Own Corps of Guides. (18)
