Production of the reference 5004 began in 1995 and remains the most complicated model in Patek Philippe's line of stopwatches. Calibre CH 27-70 Q is the beating heart of this remarkable timepiece. The movement consists of no fewer than 407 miniscule parts and is based on an ebauche crafted by Nouvelle Lemania exclusively for Patek Philippe.

The classical design also houses a perpetual calendar with 24-hour display, a precision moon phase mechanism and a patented split seconds disengagement mechanism that is capable of measuring elapsed time with accuracy to the fraction of a second. The 5004, together with the reference 5959P released in 2005, are the only split seconds chronograph wristwatches currently in production by Patek Philippe.
