A CARVED IVORY SEVEN-PANEL BOOK
TONGZHI PERIOD, INCISED GENGWU CYCLICAL DATE, CORRESPONDING TO 1870 AND OF THE PERIOD

The hinged book comprising seven panels, each panel carved to depict military figures surrounding the Northern Wei minister Bi Gan, the figures variously inhabiting fenced terraces and interior settings framed by draped curtains, the reverse carved with an inscription and bearing the signature Gengwu Zhongchun Chen Bi Gan jing, 'Mid-Spring of the Genwu year, your servant Bi Gan'
Each panel 3 1/2 x 1 7/8 in. (8.8 x 4.9 cm.)
