A FINE AND RARE WHITE JADE PEACH-SHAPED BOX AND CHAINED COVER
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The globular box elaborately carved in high relief with three bats in flight amidst leafy trees and two carp, each grasping a branch of fruiting peaches and lingzhi in its mouth, emerging from turbulent waves swirling beneath the box, the gnarled peach branch forming a chain-link between the box and the ovoid cover carved with two further bats to complete the wufu, the stone of an even milky-white tone with amber inclusion on the base

Lot Essay

Compare to two smaller examples of fruit-shaped boxes with linked covers, the first carved in the form of a pomegranate, illustrated by R. Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 86, and later sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 November 2007, lot 1515.
