AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE RELIEF
EARLY PTOLEMAIC PERIOD, CIRCA 300 B.C.
Sculpted in sunk relief, preserving a procession of deities moving to the right, all with a single plume atop their heads, holding a reed in both hands before them, depicted mummiform, the first two with human heads, one with a false beard, the third feline-headed, probably Bastet, identifying inscriptions above and between, reading: "...[who comes for]th [fr]om...; Lord of Maat who comes forth from Maaty; Deflector (of the balance (?) who comes forth from Bubastis; Pale One(?) [who comes forth from] Heliopolis," a row of stars representing the heavens in raised relief above, an inscription across the top, reading: "...beside the balance, in the presence of the Great God, Lord of the [Hal]l (?) of Maat[y]..."
