Each of hammered sheet, contoured to the length of the back of the "Achilles" tendon and bulging around the ankle bones, tapering at the front to smooth round edges, perforated twice on either edge to accommodate laces

Lot Essay

According to Snodgrass, Arms and Armor of the Greeks, p. 92-93, ankle-guards supplemented the leg protection for the hoplite afforded by the greaves.
