Lot Essay
The Class of the Seven Lobster-Claws was first listed by Beazley as part of the Penthesilea Workshop (see Attic Red-Figure Vase-Painters, p. 970-971). The subject is also discussed by Hoffmann in Sexual and Asexual Pursuit, A Structuralist Approach to Greek Vase Painting, p. 14. The seven are all left-handed claws and decorated in red figure; for an eighth see Christie's, New York, 12 December 2002, lot 129. The present example is the only known right-handed claw.
