Depicting Aphrodite wearing the arms of Ares in high relief, nude but for her mantle which envelops her legs and drapes over her left shoulder, seated and reclining to her left, her right leg bent behind her left, her left foot exposed, her right arm extending along her body, her hand resting near her left knee, Ares' shield under her left arm, holding its edge close to her breast, his helmet perched high on her head, her gaze turned to her left, a single long tress falling onto her right shoulder, the fulcrum curving up behind her, perforated at the center above

Lot Essay

All fulcra would have had been matched antithetically with the other end of the couch. Given the subject here of Aphrodite wearing the arms of Ares, it is likely that the other fulcrum would have depicted Ares. For a fulcrum attachment of a similar style with Aphrodite reclining, see no. FA 1 (C 95bis), pl. 77 in Barr-Sharrar, The Hellenistic and Early Imperial Bust.
