Lot Essay

Based on a Hellenistic original, this statue captures the goddess of love in the final preparations for her bath, with all her clothing removed but for her sandals. As Havelock notes (Hellenistic Art, no. 87), the pose leaves the goddess open and exposed on one side and closed and protected on the other, and is a complicated physical balance.
