Iakov Weber was born in 1870 into a large poor family in the Saratov region. Ignoring his father's advice to become a carpenter or a blacksmith, he persisted in studying to become an artist, moving to Moscow on Viktor Boris-Musatov's advice where he was taught by Konstantin Korovin. After seeing his studies of the Volga, Repin invited Weber to join his studio. His works were exhibited in Russia, Italy, Sweden and Holland. In 1915 he returned to the countryside where he continued to paint.

The present lot depicts the classic Russian fairytale 'Ded Mazai i Zaitsy' (Grandfather Mazai and the hares) written by Nikolai Nekrasov (1821-1878) in 1870 in which a hunter sets out in his boat to rescue a group of hares in danger of drowning.
