Lot Essay

The crowned initial 'A' entwined with an anchor is possibly the cypher of Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich (1850-1908), the fourth son of Emperor Alexander II and his first wife, Maria Alexandrovna. Alexis was admiral general and supreme chief of the Russian Imperial fleet.
A comparable gold cigarette case by Fabergé, applied with the cypher of Grand Duke Alexis, is illustrated in A La Vieille Russie, Fabergé, a Loan Exhibition for the Benefit of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Design, April 22-May 21, 1983, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1983, No. 197, p. 74.
