Lot Essay

A number of other salvers by Hendrik Swierink are known, including for example one with an inscription relating to the Russian port of Arkhangelsk (Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 9 May 2005, lot 339) and another dated 1764 (Christie's, Amsterdam, 24 September 2002, lot 64). He would seem to have favoured the use of foliage scroll borders, as on the present example, though the present salver is a larger example.
