Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the sitter is the sister of Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A. George Engleheart trained in the studio of Joshua Reynolds though the exact dates are not known. Engleheart's first copies of Reynolds's paintings were completed in 1776. On the basis of costume, the present lot dates to a similar period.
